Begin with the actual ESAT format

The ESAT has five modules: Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Every candidate takes Mathematics 1. Most candidates take two further modules, giving a typical session of three 40-minute modules. Each module contains 27 multiple-choice questions, calculators and dictionaries are not permitted, and incorrect answers do not attract a penalty. Those details should shape every part of preparation.

Twenty-seven questions in 40 minutes is an average of just under 89 seconds each, but a successful plan does not assign exactly 89 seconds to every item. Some questions are designed to yield quickly; others need a decision to estimate, eliminate, flag or return. Preparation therefore has two strands: the science and mathematics in the public specification, and the execution skills that let you use it on a screen under pressure.

Confirm your modules before doing anything else

Check the current course page for every university choice. Do not copy the combination chosen by someone applying for a similar-sounding course. UAT-UK states that candidates must select the modules required for their course, and a module choice cannot be changed at the test centre. If two applications create conflicting compulsory requirements, the official advice is to contact UAT-UK before booking.

If your course gives a genuine choice, compare modules using timed evidence. Accuracy matters, but so does how the errors arise. A slightly weaker module may improve quickly if its mistakes are narrow calculation errors; a familiar subject may be riskier if unfamiliar framing repeatedly makes you slow. Record a decision, the course-page source and the date checked so the administrative choice never becomes a late uncertainty.

Audit the specification, but do not turn it into months of notes

Download the official specification and ESAT Guide. Mark each point as secure, rusty or not yet taught. The purpose is triage. A secure topic needs mixed retrieval, a rusty topic needs a compact refresher, and a missing prerequisite may need a proper lesson. Avoid copying the specification into a beautiful document that never tests whether you can use the knowledge.

For each chosen module, build a one-page risk list. Include the topic, the smallest useful repair, and how you will verify it. For example: revise a relationship, complete six short original questions without a calculator, then face the same idea inside a mixed timed set. The verification step prevents the common error of equating recognition of notes with exam-ready fluency.

Take a diagnostic before you feel ready

A diagnostic is not a verdict and it is not a prediction of an admissions decision. It is a way to locate the largest loss of marks. Sit one complete module with no calculator, no pause and no interruptions. Record answer accuracy, time per question, questions left to the end and any answer that was correct only because of a lucky guess.

Separate the result into gaps in knowledge, method gaps, reading errors and timing decisions. A wrong answer in 35 seconds may show premature confidence; a correct answer in four minutes may show a method that cannot scale; an unanswered final item may be the cost of an earlier question. Train no-calculator route selection

The best no-calculator work often looks like less calculation. Simplify before substituting, cancel units, keep fractions exact, estimate order of magnitude and inspect the answer options. If the options differ only by sign, a sign analysis may be sufficient. If they are widely spaced, an estimate can settle the question. If units differ, dimensional reasoning can remove an option before arithmetic begins.

Build a compact automatic toolkit: common fractions and percentages, squares and simple powers, scientific notation, rearrangement, proportional changes, graph features and sensible approximations. Practise these within science and mathematics contexts rather than as isolated party tricks. The ESAT tests the decision about which calculation to perform as much as the mechanics of that calculation.

Use a three-stage practice loop

Stage one is diagnose: complete a timed module and identify the exact behaviours that cost marks. Stage two is repair: use a small set of questions sharing the same topic or mistake, first slowly enough to establish the right route and then under a modest clock. Stage three is transfer: put the idea back into a mixed timed set where the topic is not announced. A repair that works only when labelled is not finished.

Keep each loop short enough to respond to evidence. One productive week might contain a timed module, a detailed review, two targeted sessions and one short mixed set. Doing five full modules without reviewing them can simply rehearse the same errors. Conversely, staying in comfortable topic practice for weeks leaves the screen, clock, flagging and context switching untested.

Build a pacing rule you can repeat

Aim to reach the end of a first pass with several minutes available, but discover the right checkpoint through mocks rather than treating a generic split as law. A robust rule is to leave when you have neither a route nor useful progress after roughly a minute. Select the best defensible option, flag it and protect the remaining questions. With no negative marking, an unanswered item has no strategic advantage.

During review, return to flags with the highest expected value: a nearly finished calculation, a choice narrowed to two, or a question where a fresh reading may reveal the missed constraint. Do not automatically revisit every answer. Reopening secure work can introduce errors and consume the limited review window. Track whether your rule improves completion without causing a collapse in early accuracy.

Practise the whole sitting, not just your favourite module

Most candidates face about 120 minutes across three modules. Single-module scores do not reveal what happens in the third module after sustained decision-making. Schedule full sittings once the basic methods are stable. Use the order and breaks allowed by the current official experience, keep your phone away, and finish the review on another day if necessary so the simulation itself remains realistic.

Compare module performance by position. If arithmetic mistakes increase late, the repair may involve pacing, nutrition, sleep or a calmer flagging rule rather than more content revision. If one science module consistently drains time, examine its reading and representation habits. Full-session practice should answer a specific question about endurance; it should not become a weekly ordeal done only to generate a score.

An eight-week ESAT plan

In weeks one and two, confirm modules, audit the specification and complete a diagnostic in each selected module. In weeks three and four, repair the largest topic and method gaps while maintaining one short mixed timed set per module. In weeks five and six, increase full-module work and practise flagging, option use and transitions. In week seven, complete a realistic three-module sitting and use the evidence for a final narrow repair block.

Week eight is for consolidation. Revisit recurring mistakes, use shorter sets to preserve timing rhythm, check the Pearson sample interface and settle test-day logistics. Do not attempt to rebuild an entire module in the final days. A good taper protects sleep and confidence while keeping decisions familiar. If you have more than eight weeks, lengthen the repair phase rather than consuming all of the best official material immediately.

Choose resources by the job they perform

The official specification and guide define the content. The official specimen and practice tests show style, software and navigation. UAT-UK also links historic ENGAA and NSAA material, with guidance indicating where questions fall outside the current specification. Use those official resources first and follow their current notes carefully. They are especially valuable for calibration, so review them rather than racing through them.

Original commercial mocks can provide fresh diagnosis and repetition, but they should be transparent about independence and provenance.
