Small calculations carry large risk

Chemistry and Biology can feel more content-heavy than Mathematics 1, but the fastest gains often come from calculation hygiene: concentrations, ratios, percentages, graph reading, unit conversion and proportional change.

These errors are frustrating because students often understand the science. The mark disappears because the final step is rushed or the scale is misread.

Build a unit-first routine

Before calculating, write the target unit in your head. Then check each quantity against it. If a question asks for a rate, concentration or percentage change, the structure of the unit often tells you the operation.

This routine is especially useful when answer options include near-miss distractors: a factor of 10, inverted ratio, unchanged baseline, or percentage expressed as a decimal.

Review data questions by the mistake

For tables and graphs, name the reading mistake. Did you compare absolute values when the question asked for change? Did you use the wrong axis? Did you ignore a control? Did you choose the largest number rather than the largest rate?

Once named, practise five short items of the same type. Then put the skill back into a mixed timed set so it has to survive context switching.
